about

Nine songs that explore themes of innocence and desire. A Laurel Canyon-esque backdrop of pianos and guitars. Vocals that are deeply rich and ethereal at the same time. Such are the individual pieces carefully woven together to form the foundation for the self-titled album from Brooklyn-based duo Tanbark.

Tanbark began in 2011 as a long-distance songwriting collaboration between Chloe Nelson, who was studying art history in London, and James Jannicelli, a Minneapolis-based musician. By 2012, they were both in the Twin Cities, where their country and folk-inspired songwriting and close vocal harmonies began to form the basis of their sound. In 2014, the band further fleshed out their unique style in the making of debut album Write Soon, which brought together their spare and raw acoustic folk beginnings and melded it with fuller, pedal-steel-and-Telecaster country sounds and textures. Nelson and Jannicelli also relocated to Brooklyn, New York in 2014, and soon found their place in its thriving scene.

Their forthcoming self-titled album came at a time when the pair finally felt like New York was home. Inspired by the desire to make an honest portrayal of their first few years in the massive city, the album illustrates the pair’s constant search for an authentic voice and beauty underneath the hustle. With the moderately-smoothed edges of their personal experiences set against golden country music tones (pedal steel and piano), this project recorded in the midst of a harsh New York winter oozes warmth from every groove and the lyrics roll between fantasy, innocence, and desire.

In 2017, they enlisted engineer and musician Sam Owens (Cass McCombs, Blonde Redhead) to help bring Tanbark to life. While Nelson’s delicate vocals trip and dance along the verses, they anchor the band’s sound as arrangements move between Fleetwood Mac-pop and Neil Young-folk. From pensive opener “Promise To Send” to the acoustic beauty of heart-wrenching closer “Like One,” Tanbark is a delicate rendering of a journey that’s been tough at times, sweet at others, and always beautiful.

Track Name: Promise to Send
It was all a gas
Until the boy said hi
I took a second chance
Oh man how I did try...

But you take
You take
You take

Take a moment
Take your time
Air it out on an old clothesline
I'm gone, but I'll find a bird who flies true
I promise to send my love to you

I thought it would change
When we passed in the hall
We had a second glance
Oh man that changed nothing at all

But you take
You take
You take

Take a moment
Take your time
Air it out on an old clothesline
I'm gone, but I'll find a bird who flies true
I promise to send my love to you
I promise to send my love
Track Name: Châtelet
The way you hold your pen
You make the men go crazy
Tell you over again
A philosopher is not a lady

But I'll say it's you
Now the courthouse has cleared away
I'll say, It's true
My heretic, my Châtelet

Sent your favorite child
Away to be a soldier
Was the battle won
Was it ever really over?

I will come to you
In the night when you are reading
Tell you over again
Candlelight is so deceiving

And I'll say it's you
Now the courthouse has cleared away
I'll say, It's true
My heretic, my Châtelet

There's one on your mind
And another in your thinking
But know I'll be there
When your little row boat is sinking

Gambled all away
Your fortune and your favor
Tell you over again
Of the fruits of my labor

And I'll say it's you
Now the courthouse has cleared away
I'll say, It's true
My heretic, my Châtelet
My heretic, my Châtelet
My heretic, my Châtelet
Track Name: Heart-Shaped Locket
Baby I got wheels
You got a rabbit foot in your pocket
Oh, I shoulda known that there was a
trick up your sleeve with my name on it.
I don't mind one bit, got you right
here in my heart-shaped locket

Someone said your bad
Got a little ring on your finger
Oh, I feel like I wanna be that rock
I wanna be that time you
forgot who you were and
Who's to say what's real?
And who is gonna be there to stop it?

Don't you see?
Don't you remember me?
Halfway to the bottle is a long way to the car
It's a long way to Tennessee

So I hitched a ride
Wind it down and keep on talkin'
Oh, did you wonder or did you wait,
till time floated up in a cloud of smoke?
Well, I don't mind either way, got you right
here in my heart-shaped locket

Don't you see?
Don't you remember me?
Halfway to the bottle is a long way to the car
It's a long way to Tennessee
Track Name: Worth the Charm
I saw blue in the water
I saw red on his shirt collar
One more step to the urban jungle
Why bother?

I saw green in his pocket
I saw hurt in his eye socket
One more block to the old garage
Let’s park it.

Life in parallel,
You’ve been reckless
I can hardly tell when you’re alone
When you pick up the phone.
I’ve got one more lie to hang upon this silver necklace
But what puzzles me is if it’d be
Worth all of the charm.

I saw grey in the sunset
Gave me time to forget
One more go round the old dance floor,
Then I’ll drop it.

Silver screen’s gone busted
Did you love, or did you lust it?
This whole town’s got me oh so tired,
And disgusted.

Life in parallel,
You’ve been reckless
I can hardly tell when you’re alone
When you pick up the phone.
I’ve got one more lie to hang upon this silver necklace
But what puzzles me is if it’d be
Worth all of the charm.
Track Name: Steal a Heart
Oh please, don't make me cry
Oh please, don't make me cry
I might be heartless, I can't help it I'm not shy

Knave took my heart, threw it in a barrel,
Slung it down Niagara Falls
Knave took my heart, threw it in a barrel,
Slung it down Niagara Falls

I could count the stars
but that don't make ’em shine
I could steal a heart
but that won't make it mine.

Oh please don't make me laugh
Oh please don't make me laugh
I lost my smile, and it ain’t comin back.

I fell in love with a sailor.
He was making waves out on the ocean tide.
I fell in love with a sailor.
He was making waves out on the ocean tide.

I could count the stars
but that don't make ’em shine
I could steal a heart
but that won't make it mine.

Oh please, don't make me cry.
Oh please, don't make me cry.
I might be heartless, but I cannot tell you why.
Track Name: The Bridge
On my side, there's a shattered old tavern.
On my side, there's a church on the hill.
Over here we work late. Here we keep our lawns straight,
And we promise to do the Lord's will.

We're two worlds apart, and no love is lost.
The space between us, nothing can cross
Except the Chacahoula Bridge, 'cross the Evangeline.
But I stay on my side
And I stay on mine.

On my side, at an all-night diner,
I joined her alone at a booth.
We laughed and we lied, and we stayed there all night
But deep down we both knew the truth.

We're two worlds apart, and no love is lost.
The space between us, nothing can cross
Except the Chacahoula Bridge, 'cross the Evangeline.
But I stay on my side
And I stay on mine.

I came home last month to a notice:
Three weeks till you’re out on your ass,
You'll have to leave town, they're tearing her down
To make room for a new overpass.

On my side, everything's changing.
It's been ten years since I've seen his face.
Well, things fall apart, so I moved away,
Across the bridge to find a new place

We're two worlds apart, and no love is lost.
The space between us, nothing can cross
Except the Chacahoula Bridge, 'cross the Evangeline.
But I stay on my side
And I stay on mine.

Except the Chacahoula Bridge, 'cross the Evangeline.
But I stay on my side
And I stay on mine.
Track Name: Testing My Luck
Testing my luck
And biding my time
Threw my wishbone to the sea

Had a lot, then a lack
And I nearly got a heart attack
The die is cast,
I'm testing my luck

Testing my luck
And holding my breath
Threw my wishbone to the sea
Oh I swam to the shore
But there are sharks out there I can't ignore
This little mess, I'm testing my luck

Don't wait for me I'm slow I've always been
That don't mean I don't need a friend
For when I'm done,
You can tell me if I won

Testing my luck
With pennies and dimes
Threw my wishbone to the sea
Oh I counted to ten
Then I woke up and started again
I won't learn my lesson, I'm testing my luck
I won't learn my lesson, I'm testing my luck
Track Name: Ragdoll Blues
Said that he was looking
Blue eyes, orange hair
Longing for his little ragdoll
But, she wasn't there

Sunday came so sudden.
All alone at the square.
Wedding bells were ringing,
But she wasn't there.

Will you be my antidote,
For a ragged little love no more?
Will you stay, mess my sail,
For a coin or a ragged little tale?

So, your eyes are golden.
So, your tales are tall.
What was I to do when
She wasn't there at all?

Drive around a moment.
Take the wheel and stall.
Recall when last you saw her
That ragged little doll.

Will you be my antidote,
For a ragged little love no more?
Will you stay, mess my sail,
For a coin or a ragged little tale?

Will you be my antidote,
For a ragged little love no more?
Will you stay, mess my sail,
For a coin or a ragged little tale?
Track Name: Like One
If I told you now that I’m crazy for you
Would you know the good thing to do?
Like one, like two

If I told you now that I’m mad about you
Would you see the simple thing to do?
Like one, like two
Like one, like two

If I told you now who loves you the most
Would you see the forest or the trees?
Like one, two, three
Like one, blister in the sun
Like two, thorn in my shoe
Like three, as wide as the sea
Like three, like me
Like three, like me
Like three, like me
